4 July 2009 - The number of A/H1N1 flu cases in Indonesia has reached 20 as 12 new cases were confirmed on Friday, the Health Ministry said. Of the 12 patients, eight are now receiving treatment in hospital in the capital Jakarta, and four others are being treated in Denpasar, Bali, Lily Sulistyowati, a spokesperson of the ministry said.

spacer 16 December 2008 - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was in Yogyakarta just for a short period. But as usual a President does not travel somewhere if he doesn't have his agenda filled. Coming from eastern Java yesterday, he traveled to the Prambanan temple in the morning while in the afternoon he officially opened Taman Pintar. His evening is probably filled with a dinner with the sultan and governor of Yogyakarta province, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, which could well be a next President as well.

Indonesian history

It is generally believed that the earliest inhabitants of the Indonesian archipelago originated in India or Burma. In 1890, fossils of Java Man (homo erectus), some 500,000 years old, were found in east Java. Later migrants ('Malays') came from southern China and Indochina, and began populating the archipelago around 3000 BC. Powerful groups such as the Buddhist Srivijaya empire and the Hindu Mataram kingdom appeared in Java and Sumatra towards the end of the 7th century. The last important kingdom to remain Hindu was the Majapahit, which was founded in the 13th century. The subsequent spread of Islam into the archipelago in the 14th century forced the Majapahits to retreat to Bali in the 15th century. (...)

26 May 2009 - Thick smoke caused by forest fires in the province of Riau on the island of Sumatra has hampered school activities. A number of schools in the district of Rokan Hilir has been forced to close down. Already a number of schools has been closed down, also in the neighboring district of Bangko, where almost all elementary schools have been closed.

5 September 2008 - Indonesia hopes negotiations on the material transfer agreement for bird flu virus specimen can be rounded up at the inter-governmental meeting of WHO members in November, health minister Siti Fadillah Supari said. Indonesia hopes the agreement can be kept simple but it has to able to accommodate the interests of the developing countries, Antara news agency on Friday quoted the minister as saying.

29 January 2009 - The National Elections Commission (KPU) have decreed that the next general election for Indonesia's President and Vice President will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2009. If a run off election is required, that will take place on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. The Presidential Elections will be preceded by legislative elections set for April 9, 2009 with the formal certification of those results to be made by KPU on May 9, 2009.
