The province (provinsi or propinsi) is the highest tier of local government subnational entity in Indonesia. Each province has its own local government (Pemerintah Daerah Provinsi), headed by the governor (gubernur); and has its own legislative body (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah). North Sulawesi or Sulawesi Utara is a province of Indonesia. It is on the island of Sulawesi, and
borders only Gorontalo province, which was split off from North Sulawesi in December 2000.
Its provincial capital and largest city is Manado. The region is predominantly Christian (70%) with Muslim and Hindu
minorities, which is an exception in this largely Muslim country. The largest ethnic group is the Minahasa, who
speak Manado Malay.
North Sulawesi has a population of about 1.97 million (2000 census).
