Mount Rinjani National Park on the west Nusa Tenggara Island of Lombok has become recognized and hailed worldwide as spectacular and most magnificent travel area, since Rinjani Trek was named as one of the four outstanding tourism destination at the prestigious World Legacy Awards in Washington DC on 8th June 2004. Rinjani won the Destination Stewardship Award, selected as the tourism destination that best demonstrates effective protection of its natural and cultural environment in the world.

The 2004 World Legacy Award for environmental and social leaders in tourism was presented to Rinjani Trek from Conservation International (CI) and National Geographic Traveler Magazine, in a ceremony at the National Geographic Society by Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan, the 2004 World Legacy Award Chairperson. Accepting the award for the National Parks Office of the Ministry of Forestry and the Rinjani Trek Management Board, was Drs. Tjokorda Suthendra Rai, Head of West Lombok Tourism. Also attending from the National Parks office was Ir. Tedi Sutedi, M.Sc. Director of Gunung Rinjani Natinal Park.
The World Legacy Award is unique for its focus on environmental responsibility and respecting cultural heritage. It is the only global tourism award to perform on-site verification visits by scientific, anthropological and tourism professionals. These winners are perfect examples of the way the travel and tourism industry should operate, said Her Majesty Queen Noor. I am heartened by their example and hope other extraordinary places are similarly inspired. On a further local award night recently held at the Sahid Legi Hotel on 27th June, Drs. H.B Thamrin Rayes (the Vice Governor NTB) presented a framed certificate of recognition to the Rinjani Trek Management Board celebrating the Destination Stewardship of the 2004 World Legacy Award. Present were all the individuals that contributed towards Rinjani Trek winning the award : Mal Clarbrough member board Rinjani Trek, Ted Sutedi Head of Gunung national Park, Asmunitrek Rinjani Trek Manager, R. Mayanto management Rinjani Trek R. Akribuana the Head of Senaru Village and Taam head Rinjani Guide based in Senaru.
