On the norteastern tip of Jawa is the unattractive town of Merak. Most tourists only come here on their way to Sumatera.
Who is interested in one of the two prestigious governmental project of Indonesia ( the other is the plane factory PT Nusantara in Bandung ) should visit the Krakatau Steel factories in Cilegon, 14 km west of Merak. The factory was first built by Russia, but after the coup of 1965 the construction stopped. When the oilprices kept on rising between 1973 and 1982, Pertamina finished the project with foreign support.
Several kilometers north of Merak is Florida Beach. Originally this place was named Pulo Rida, but this was replaced by Florida. Until the 1950's this was a popular destination among Jakartans.
You can take the train from Tanah Abang Station in Jakarta to Merak, the trip takes about four hours. Bug you can also take a bus, which takes three hours from Kalideres bus station. If you are coming from Sumatera, you can take the boat from Bakauheni, travel time 1,5 hours and cheap transpoer as well.
